GMRS Usage and Licensing User Guide

1. What is GMRS?

GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) is a land-mobile radio service for short-distance, two-way communication. It operates on frequencies around 462 and 467 MHz and is often used by families, businesses, and communities for local communication.

2. Who Can Use GMRS?

Anyone 18 years or older can use GMRS, but a license from the FCC is required. No test is needed, but you must apply and pay a fee.

3. Obtaining a GMRS License

  • Step 1: Visit the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS) website.
  • Step 2: Create an FCC user account if you don’t have one.
  • Step 3: Apply for a GMRS license by filling out Form 605. There is a one-time fee of $35, and the license is valid for 10 years. It also covers your immediate family members.

4. Using GMRS Radios

Once licensed:

  • Power Limits: Handheld radios can use up to 5 watts, while base stations or repeaters can use up to 50 watts.
  • Channels: GMRS uses 22 channels, some shared with FRS (Family Radio Service). GMRS-specific channels support higher power and repeater use.
  • Repeaters: GMRS allows for repeater use, which extends the communication range significantly. Ensure you have permission to use a repeater.

5. Basic Communication Tips

  • Call Sign: You must identify your station with your FCC-issued call sign at the end of transmissions or every 15 minutes during prolonged conversations.
  • Etiquette: Avoid monopolizing channels, and follow local repeater rules if you’re using one.

6. Prohibited Uses

GMRS radios cannot be used for business purposes or illegal activities. Adhere to FCC rules to avoid fines.

By following these guidelines, you can legally and effectively use GMRS for communication with family or community groups over moderate distances.
